What’s up with this month?

Everything everyone has ever said about this show is correct. My god, I can’t stop thinking about these boys.

There are certain actors that I’ll follow to every project they do. The FX show Legion created in me a lifelong fan of Hamish Linklater, certified Guy I Love To See, and the moment I found out he has an appearance in Widow’s Bay, I marched on down to the app store with my credit card to sign up for Apple TV. Widow’s Bay is one of the best shows on TV, and definitely is the best show of 2026. The balancing at of horror and comedy is so difficult to do, and I am so impressed that they’ve managed to pull it off so consistently well. I feel like I’ve been sleeping on Stephen Root? The man who has always been there for us all? So underappreciated? God I love character actors.

I don’t think that Luna Abyss was the best game I played this month, but it is the one that deserves so much more attention and love than it got. It’s wearing its inspiration on its sleeve – a little bit Bioshock, a lot of Blame!, a lot of “story told through media logs you find laying around” – but the way it’s doing those things feels so striking. Part of it is the excellent voice cast knocking it out of the park (love to hear the Welsh accent in a video game!), but overwhelmingly it’s the writing having this pervasive sense of tragedy. From the description of a man telling his children not to look back so the last memory of they have as they flee their home isn’t screaming and disease (you find this on their bodies), to one of the builders of this failed utopia writing to another, “I’m so sorry, you were right all along, I hope you made it out even if I didn’t,” regret oozes from every pore of the people in this setting. It’s got a lot to say about gender and our relationship to our bodies forced to labor, all set in an infinite labyrinth of industry and rust.

I loved this game. It was so fresh and unique and the entire team was laid off the week I finished it. The games industry is collapsing, and it’s hard not to grieve for the developers who poured their time and life into this game. They deserve better.

What’s on deck?

Oh boy wow oh jeez golly wow wow wow moving blows!

That out of the way, while my books were the very last thing to be unpacked, the TV was up by day 2. I celebrated my newfound TV independence by watching an absurd number of documentaries, particularly cult documentaries, on Netflix. Wheeeeeee! This upcoming month, I’m anticipating reading a lot more now that my evenings have been freed up and my books liberated from their cardboard tombs (I’ve also had to purchase and assemble new bookshelves for my home library/office, which was a delightful – I’m one of the few people on earth that actually likes assembling furniture – and financially disastrous task).
