Anyone who knows me knows that for my day job, I do a lot of travel in the fall. This year was particularly intense, as I was due to make roughly six trips in five weeks (my mantra during this period is “if you need me for anything, no you don’t”). I do love that I get to travel for work, but it means that havoc is wrought upon my life and my media consumption. Therefore, this update will be a little different than my usual media log.
I have chosen to divide it into an Internet-friendly list – based on the major trips! I’m writing on a longer post in a few days with more critical thoughts on some of my favorites from the below, but for now…what have I been up to?
To begin:
The United Kingdom
hey, did you know I have really bad flight anxiety?
More on that later. September was very much divided into a Before and After – media I tried to jam into place before I left, and things I saw/read on flights. The books I managed to finish before I hopped on a plane were:
- Think of England and Subtle Blood by KJ Charles. Absolutely both bangers, I love her work π
- Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid
- The Fellowship of the Ring
I also managed to catch Tony in theaters, which reminded me a lot of the 2013 film The Way Way Back except swapping the mentor figure of Sam Rockwell with Antonio Banderas. It was a quieter movie than I anticipated, but mostly I walked away with the kind of wistful sadness a lot of Millennials feel about the loss of Anthony Bourdain. I miss him.
what else?
- Video Games
- Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth
- Fields of Mistria
- Hollow Knight: Silksong
- Control: Resonant
- Movies
- Resident Evil
- Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
- TV
- Lanterns
- Ted Lasso
- Hacks
- Yuri on Ice (this was on the in-flight offerings, by the way)
Denver
JUST kidding!
Guess who got The Novel Coronavirus π . I started feeling ill a day or so before I had to leave, and thank god I took a test before deciding to inflict myself on others. This gave me the time and headspace to plow through a bunch of books, most of which I really enjoyed. The books I read were:
- Prairie, Dresses, Art, Other by Danielle Dutton
- Servants to the King by Marion Scott
- On Fridays We Eat Meat by AS Hopewell
- Canon by Paige Lewis
- Cells, Fully Differentiated by Kinsey Cantrell

- Video Games
- Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth
- Fields of Mistria
- Control: Resonant

- Scary Movie
Washington, DC
vibes are kind of off
Once I was up and at ’em once more, it was time to go to DC for a week. A strange time overall – the District remains gorgeous in the fall, with the leaves just beginning to turn, the days sunny, and the nights cool, and the National Guard lounging on street corners.
Around this trip and after, I read:
- Tough Guy by Rachel Reid
- Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells
- Subtle Blood by KJ Charles (yes, again)
Two pieces of media absolutely dominated this period (and to now). The first is Ken Russell’s The Devils, which I saw twice in two different theaters in the month of October. My god, what a masterpiece. It frankly felt illegal to see a movie like this in a real movie theater, and I feel so grateful that I managed to see it twice.
The other is Control: Resonant, which I have now played through twice and gotten my platinum trophy. More on that in another blog post, I think.
